FAQ: Common Questions

FAQ Common Questions

Thoughtful answers to some of the questions people ask most often.

Astrology

What is astrology?

Astrology is the study of the symbolic relationship between the heavens and human experience. It does not claim that the stars cause events or compel our choices. Rather, it approaches the cosmos as a meaningful order that can be contemplated with wisdom, humility, and discernment.

Is astrology fortune telling?

Short answer: No.

I do not practice fortune telling or claim to predict fixed future events. Astrology is better understood as a language of time than as a script of destiny. It can illuminate seasons of life, recurring patterns, and opportunities for growth, but your choices remain your own.

Can astrology predict the future?

Short answer: No.

If life were already written, wisdom would be unnecessary. Astrology does not replace freedom, prayer, experience, or discernment. At its best, it helps us understand the season we are living through so that we may respond to it more wisely.

Do the stars cause events?

Short answer: No.

The stars do not make us do anything. My approach understands astrology symbolically rather than causally. The heavens may reveal patterns of meaning, but they neither compel human action nor replace our freedom and responsibility.

Why should anyone pay attention to the heavens?

Because human beings have always looked upward in search of meaning.

Scripture tells us that “the heavens declare the glory of God.” Throughout history, people have understood creation as reflecting divine wisdom. My work explores whether the heavens may also be approached as a symbolic language that invites reflection rather than prediction.

Sessions

What happens during a session?

Each session is a thoughtful conversation centered on your birth chart and your questions. Together we explore your temperament, strengths, recurring patterns, relationships, life direction, or current season of life. My goal is not simply to explain a chart, but to help you see yourself more clearly.

Which session is right for me?

If you’re new to astrology, Your Life in Time is the best place to begin. If you’re simply curious and would like to ask a few questions, Ask the Astrologer offers a shorter introduction. If your birth time is uncertain, Birth Time Rectification can help establish a more accurate foundation for future work.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

Many readings can still be done without an exact birth time.

If greater precision is needed, I also offer Birth Time Rectification—a careful process that uses significant life events to estimate the most likely birth time.

Should I be nervous?

Not at all.

Most people arrive with curiosity—and perhaps a little uncertainty. There are no tests to pass and nothing you are expected to know beforehand. My hope is that every session feels less like a consultation and more like a thoughtful conversation with a trusted guide.

Will you tell me what decisions I should make?

No.

I don’t tell people whom to marry, which job to take, or how to live their lives. My role is to help you understand yourself more deeply so that you can make wiser and more intentional decisions for yourself.

Faith & Philosophy

Can Christians explore astrology?

Many Christians are understandably cautious about astrology, and for good reason. Some forms of astrology make claims that conflict with Christian teaching.

My own work takes those concerns seriously. I reject determinism, divination, and any suggestion that created things replace trust in God. Instead, I explore astrology as a symbolic and contemplative discipline within carefully defined theological boundaries.

My forthcoming book, The Catholic Astrologer: Reclaiming a Meaningful Cosmos, examines these questions in much greater depth.

Is this compatible only with Catholicism?

No.

Although my own perspective is shaped by the Catholic intellectual tradition, I work with people of many faiths—and with people of no religious faith at all. Sessions are never an attempt to persuade anyone religiously. They are conversations about meaning, growth, and becoming more fully yourself.

Does astrology diminish human freedom?

Quite the opposite.

Every meaningful astrological conversation assumes that you are free. Your birth chart is not your destiny. It is a symbolic map of potentials, tensions, gifts, and challenges. What you become depends upon the choices you make throughout your life.

Does symbolic astrology conflict with science?

No.

Science studies measurable causes and physical processes. Astrology, as I practice it, concerns symbolic meaning. Appreciating symbolic meaning no more conflicts with science than appreciating poetry conflicts with grammar. They answer different kinds of questions and enrich our understanding in different ways.

About Magus Bear

What makes your approach different?

Many contemporary approaches to astrology focus on prediction, personality typing, or spiritual systems drawn from many traditions.

My work begins with a different question:

Can astrology be understood as a symbolic way of contemplating a meaningful cosmos while respecting both reason and human freedom?

Whether or not you share my religious convictions, my goal is to help you understand yourself with greater clarity, compassion, and wisdom.

Do I need to know astrology?

Not at all.

Most people who meet with me know very little about astrology. I’ll explain everything in clear, everyday language. You don’t need to memorize symbols or technical terminology to benefit from a session.

Why “Magus Bear”?

The Magi remind us that wisdom begins with wonder. They looked to the heavens not to master the future, but to follow truth wherever it led.

The bear represents steadiness, contemplation, courage, and quiet strength.

Together they express the spirit of this work: seeking wisdom under heaven.

What does “Seeking Wisdom Under Heaven” mean?

The phrase expresses the conviction that wisdom begins with attentive observation—of ourselves, of one another, of creation, and ultimately of God.

The heavens have inspired wonder throughout human history. Whether we study the stars scientifically, contemplate them spiritually, or simply stand beneath them in silence, they invite us to remember that we inhabit a universe larger than ourselves. My hope is that every conversation, every article, and every session contributes to that lifelong search for wisdom.

Practical Matters

Are sessions online or in person?

Sessions are currently held online via Zoom, allowing us to meet wherever you are. All you need is a reliable internet connection and a quiet place where we can talk without interruption.

How should I prepare for a session?

Bring your curiosity and any questions that are on your mind. If you know your birth date, birth place, and birth time, please have those available before our meeting. If you’re unsure of your birth time, don’t worry—we can discuss the options together.

Who are your sessions for?

Anyone seeking greater self-understanding.

Some people come during times of transition. Others are simply curious about astrology or interested in personal growth. You do not need to share my worldview to benefit from the conversation.

I still have a question.
